About this recipe: It's a classic pud that everyone loves. With juicy fruit and a crunchy topping, nothing tastes better. This crumble is made with apples but you could use any seasonal fruit instead, including gooseberries, raspberries or rhubarb. Serve with creamy custard for retro appeal!

  • For the crumble
  • 200g plain flour
  • 100g soft butter
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 50g ground almonds
  • For the filling
  • 6 Bramley apples
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 75g light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4.
  2. For the crumble:

  3. Sieve the flour into the mixing bowl. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs, or whizz up in a food processor. Stir in the sugar and ground almonds and set aside.
  4. For the filling:

  5. Peel the apples and carefully take out the cores. Chop up the flesh into even-sized chunks
  6. Put the apples into a pan with the lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon. Cover and cook over a gentle heat for five minutes to soften.
  7. Spoon the apples into an ovenproof dish. Scatter the the crumble mix over the top.
  8. Bake for 40 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove from the oven and serve warm with ice cream or custard.
