Favourite cottage pie

    This is my own recipe for cottage pie. My kids love it! The baked beans stretch out the mince to feed more on a budget.

    Serves: 6 

    • vegetable oil
    • 2 small white onions, finely chopped
    • 2 carrots, cubed
    • 750g minced beef
    • 1 1/2 beef stock cubes
    • 2 tins baked beans
    • 1 cupful frozen peas
    • 500g potatoes - peeled, boiled and mashed with milk and butter
    • 1 handful grated mature Cheddar cheese

    1. Preheat oven 180 C / Gas 4.
    2. Heat a drizzle of oil in a frying pan and fry onions and carrots for 3 to 4 minutes, till softened. Add the mince and fry till browned.
    3. Crumble your stock cubes into mince and stir until dissolved. Add the beans and frozen peas and cook for another 2 minutes.
    4. Transfer mince mixture into a casserole dish and cover with your mash potato evenly. Sprinkle a handful of grated cheese on the top.
    5. Bake for 35 minutes, till top is lightly browned. Serve and enjoy.


    Somtimes I add a tiny dash of Worcester sauce when I add the beans. Sometimes I sprinkle a few breadcrumbs on top with the cheese.
