Chinese-style Brussels sprouts

    The title says it all. Brussels sprouts are flavoured with garlic, ginger, soy sauce and sesame oil for a tasty change from the norm.

    Serves: 2 

    • oil for frying
    • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
    • 250g Brussels sprouts, halved
    • 4 spring onions, cut into 5cm pieces
    • 2cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
    • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
    • 1 teaspoon cornflour
    • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
    • 40 to 50ml water

    1. Heat the oil, and gently cook the garlic for about 1 minute. Add Brussels sprouts, spring onions and ginger and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
    2. Meanwhile, dissolve the cornflour in the soy sauce and add to the pan along with the sesame oil.
    3. Toss to coat the sprouts with the mixture then add the water. Cover the pan and leave on a low heat till sprouts are as soft (or hard) as you like them.
