Halloween buried alive cake

    1 hour 20 min

Any dark loaf cake can be made even 'darker' by adding doll arms and legs to create a buried alive effect. I used very ripe bananas just because I had them. A plain chocolate cake will do just as well.

    Serves: 12

    • 250g plain flour
    • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
    • 1 generous pinch salt
    • 115g butter, softened
    • 115g light brown soft sugar
    • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
    • 400g very ripe bananas, mashed with a fork
    • arms and legs of a small plastic doll

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease a 900g loaf tin.
    2. Mix flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a bowl.
    3. In a second bowl beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add eggs and mashed bananas and mix well. Sift the flour mix into the wet ingredients and fold in with a spatula until evenly combined. Tip the mix in the prepared loaf tin.
    4. Bake in the preheated oven until a tester inserted in the centre comes out clean, 60 to 65 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool in the tin for 10 minutes then unmould onto a wire rack and let cool completely.
    5. Gently push the doll parts into the loaf so it looks like someone has been buried alive and is trying to get out. Pretty gruesome, I know, but it's Halloween!
