Halloween jalapeño poppers

    45 min

Jalapeño chillies are relatively mild so they work well for these edible mummies. A fun and easy Halloween-themed starter.

    Serves: 12

    • 150g cream cheese, softened
    • 80g Cheddar cheese, grated
    • salt and pepper
    • 6 large fresh jalapeño chillies, halved and seeded
    • 1 (350g) packet unbaked croissant dough, chilled
    • 1 egg, lightly beaten
    • 1 tablespoon milk, or as needed
    • 50g plain flour
    • 24 edible eyeballs

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.
    2. Combine cream cheese and Cheddar cheese in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Spoon filling into jalapeño halves.
    3. Roll out croissant dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into thin strips using a pizza cutter or a small knife. Wrap stuffed jalapeños with dough strips, leaving a small space unwrapped for the eyes.
    4. Combine egg and milk in a bowl. Add flour to another bowl and season with salt and pepper. Dip stuffed jalapeños first in the egg mixture, then roll in the flour. Place on the prepared baking tray.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven until dough is lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from baking tray and decorate with edible eyeballs, pressing down lightly to make them stick in the melted cheese.

If you like, you can also deep-fry the poppers but I prefer them baked.

A little bland and didn’t have much heat. It was enjoyed by my guests and was a creative appetizer.  -  30 Oct 2018  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
