Chocolate and Date Cake

    This cake is simple enough to eat with a cuppa, yet good enough to serve for a special occasion. It's one of my family's favourites.

    Serves: 24 

    • 275g (10 oz) dates, pitted and chopped
    • 250ml (8 fl oz) boiling water
    • 225g (8 oz) plain flour
    • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 3 teaspoons cocoa powder
    • 200g (7 oz) caster sugar
    • 125g (4¼ oz) butter
    • 2 eggs
    • 50g (2 oz) chopped walnuts
    • 175g (6 oz) chocolate chips

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4. Grease and flour a 23x33cm baking tin.
    2. In a small bowl, pour boiling water over dates and set aside to cool.
    3. In a medium bowl, mix flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and cocoa. Set aside.
    4. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs. Add flour mixture alternating with cooled date mixture. Fold in chopped nuts and 1/2 of the chocolate chips.
    5. Pour mixture into prepared baking tin and spread evenly. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 of the chocolate chips over top.
    6. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted into middle of cake comes out clean.

    This cake is yummy. Watch carefully after 40 minutes so it doesn't burn. The children don't care for it, but that's OK, that much more for me!  -  18 Jul 2008


    This was so easy to make. I had no choc chips but chopped up good cooking chocolate instead, kept the biggest chunks for the top. I also added a splash (or two) of amaretto to the water for the dates. It made a scrumptious, chewy, moist, huge cake which keeps extremely well. I think you've guessed I will be making it again. I think I'll line the base of the tin next time.  -  07 Feb 2014
