Pears don't always have to be poached in wine! If you add ginger, vanilla and anise, the syrup will taste just as good! These poached pears pair perfectly with chocolate brownies, or granola and plain yoghurt or with French toast.
Pour 1 litre of water into a saucepan; bring to the boil over medium heat. Add the sugar and stir well until the sugar has dissolved completely. Add cinnamon stick, cloves, black peppercorns, 1/2 lemon, vanilla bean, anise and fresh ginger.
Carefully place the pears in the liquid; cover the saucepan with a lid and cook for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until tender.
Allow the pears to cool in the saucepan until warm; serve with the syrup.
