Everton toffee

    40 min

This is a toffee I remember my mother making for birthday parties and school fetes. Its a jaw sticking long lasting toffee that you can suck on for hours.

    205 people made this

    Serves: 14

    • 200g (7 oz) caster sugar
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 2 tablespoons boiling water
    • 2 tablespoons vinegar
    • 100's and 1000's or crushed nuts to finish

    Prep:10min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:40min

    1. Put all ingredients into a saucepan. Boil without stirring until the mixture crackles in cold water (takes about 1/2 hour).
    2. Pour into paper baking cases and leave to set. Sprinkle with 100's and 1000's or crushed nuts.
    3. For a chewier toffee, cook for a shorter time (until toffee forms a soft ball when dropped into cold water).

Really nice and really easy, but I think that 2 tbsp vinegar is too sour, and spoils the sweetness a bit. 1 tbsp or 2 tsp would be suffient.  -  29 Jan 2011

I think this is a delightful recipe! Its easy to make, and VERY easy to prepare, and you can suck on it for ages! It's very crunchy and chewy and wonderful. I would highly recommend it! The only catch for me was testing how long it would cook for! I tested it after ten minutes and after fifteen, and I think you should judge what time you want to take it out on. Its easy to make it soft or very crunchy. I think you should adjust it to your taste. Thanks for this wonderful toffee recipe! Well, going back to check on how Dad's doing, I found out he burnt it after ten minutes of cooking!! :~/ Probably don't keep it on high for ages...!! It still tastes good though!!  -  28 Dec 2011
