There are many different variations of the French grilled cheese sandwich. My mother always made it very simple, just with cheese and ham.

Ingredients
Serves: 4
8 slices white bread
40g butter, softened
2 slices cooked ham
100g grated Gruyère cheese
Method Prep:10min › Cook:5min › Ready in:15min
Butter the bread on both sides.
Cut ham slices to fit the bread and place on 4 of the bread slices.
Sprinkle with cheese.
Place the second bread slices on top.
Cook in a panini press or in a frying pan, pressing down the sandwiches and turning them as needed, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
