I've made a version of this for years - a great favourite! I have it as an open sandwich, toasting two thick slices of wholemeal bread, then spreading with peanut butter, laying slices of apple (or pear, or peach, or nectarine) on top, and eat while toast is till warm. Lovely! One apple or other fruit will be enough to cover two slices of toast. - 04 Nov 2008
