Serves: 12 

  • 250g plain flour
  • 50g cocoa powder
  • 300g caster sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 300ml milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 175g chocolate buttons or chocolate chips
  • 75g chopped walnuts
  • 50g whole almonds
  • 4 tablespoons demerara sugar

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4. Grease muffin tin or line with paper muffin liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt. In a large bowl combine milk, egg, oil and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients to large bowl; mix well. Add chocolate chips and walnuts, stir well.
  3. Fill muffin liners 3/4 full. Poke almonds into tops of unbaked muffins. Sprinkle muffins with demerara sugar.
  4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in centre comes out clean.

I made these muffins today and they turned out ok, but the mixture was a little runny so will try reducing the milk and increasing the flour a little next time. - 19 Apr 2009


Loved this recipe, only changes I made was more nuts and less choc chips. Oh i also used low cal sugar as I'm dieting and I used them as a treat - yum yum! - 21 Aug 2012
