250g plain flour

4 tablespoons caster sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

50g butter, chilled

1 apple - peeled, cored and grated

125ml milk

2 tablespoons milk

2 tablespoons caster sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preparation method
- Preheat oven to 220 degrees C.
- Measure flour, sugar, baking powder, bicarb and salt into a large bowl. Rub in butter until crumbly. Add grated apple and milk. Stir to form a soft dough.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently 8 to 10 times. Pat into two 15cm (6-inch) circles. Place on greased baking tray. Brush tops with milk, and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Score each into 6 wedges or stamp out into round scones.
- Bake for 15 minutes, or until browned and risen. Serve warm with butter.
