Spicy Cheese Straws

    These cheesy and buttery cheese straws come with a kick thanks to a touch of cayenne. If desired, omit the cayenne for a simple cheese straw recipe.

    Serves: 48 

    • 250g plain flour
    • 275g grated mature Cheddar cheese
    • 165g butter
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 125ml water

    1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / Gas mark 6. Grease or line a baking tray with parchment.
    2. Combine the flour, baking powder, cayenne pepper, salt, grated cheese and butter in a bowl and mix until well combined. Add water a little bit at a time to make a very stiff dough.
    3. On a lightly floured surface, roll pieces of the dough into just slightly thicker than pencil shaped sticks. Cut sticks into 8 to 12cm lengths. Arrange the pieces on the baking tray.
    4. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes or until browned.
