About this recipe: If you don't take kindly to recipes that instruct you to "cream the butter and sugar" then this one's for you! Prepare this cake batter on the cooker...it's my Aunty Orietta's classic chocolate cake recipe. Delicious!


Serves: 12 

  • 250ml water
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 150g margarine or butter
  • 2 tblspns cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 175g self-raising flour

Prep:15min  ›  Cook:45min  ›  Ready in:1hr 

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
  2. Grease and flour a casserole or pyrex dish (28x18cm or 23x23cm.) This is the final presentation dish you can cut and serve from: no need to turn the cake out onto a platter.
  3. Place first 5 ingredients into a saucepan and heat on medium. Stir well and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour into a mixing bowl and cool.
  4. Mix in 2 eggs and flour.
  5. Pour mixture into prepared pyrex dish. Bake at 180 C for 40 - 45 minutes.
  6. Remove when done and cool. Cover with chocolate icing and sprinkles or a simple dusting of icing sugar.

Easy to make but has a curious bouncy/stodgy texture when cooled! Probably better eaten when still warm as a chocolate pudding rather than cold as a cake. - 27 Jan 2010
