The perfect apple crumble
I love apple crumble. Even more than apple pie. After many years of trial and error and amalgamating other recipes I think I've finally perfected it! Or to the delight of my taste buds anyway.
Ingredients
Serves: 8
- 7 large green apples
- 100g caster sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon (ground)
- 125g plain flour
- 175g dark brown sugar
- 75g rolled oats
- 50g desiccated coconut
- 1 tbsp cinnamon (ground)
- 2 tsp nutmeg (ground)
- 150g butter (melted)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract

- Peel and core apples, then cut into rough 1-2cm cubes. Place apples in large saucepan and cover with water. Simmer covered with lid on high until apples are tender but not too soft (usually 5-10 mins once water is simmering). Drain apples well and place in large bowl
- Combine caster sugar and cinnamon (ensures even spread), then toss through the apples.
- Combine flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, coconut, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl until evenly mixed through.
- Melt butter (do not burn or boil it) and add vanilla essence to butter, stir through.
- Add butter mix to dry ingredients and mix well using a fork. Ensure all ingredients are moist and mixture has a crumbly texture.
- Place apple mix evenly in medium casserole dish. Spread crumble mix over top of apple. Bake at 180 C / Gas 4 for 30-40 minutes, or until crumble topping is slightly browned.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream, cream or custard and ENJOY!

We loved this fabulous twist on a crumble. the flapjack topping is totally delicious with a lovely caramel flavour. I've been making crumbles for years and this recipe has certainly topped it.....and very quick and easy to make!! Thanks!! - 03 Feb 2010
This is a delicious version of the classic apple crumble, and the addition of oats gives the topping an almost flapjack taste, was apsolutely delicious and easy to prepare and make, loved it! - 28 Sep 2009
Made this a couple of months ago... IT IS DELICIOUS. Due to the poor weather today and in need of some comfort food, pudding tonight.......delicious Apple crumble. Thank you soo much for sharing this recipe, I am going to tweak it slightly and make extra topping. - 26 May 2014
