Place water in a large saucepan, and stir in cabbage, apples, brown sugar, vinegar, cinnamon, allspice, cloves and 1 tablespoon butter. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat, and cover. Simmer 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender. Stir in remaining butter before serving.
I reduced the vinegar to 150ml and added a handful of raisins and it was really good. My husband loved it and it's very tasty cold as a pickle. Would probably add a bit more spice next time. There will definitely be a next time though. - 16 Oct 2012
