About this recipe: My grandmother has been making this dish for all special occasions for as long as I can remember. Everyone who has tried it has loved it... hope you do too.

Serves: 6 

  • 3 bags of frozen cut green beans (aprox. 1.25kg)
  • 6 rashers of streaky bacon
  • 1 large onion, coarsely chopped
  • 8 large mushrooms, sliced
  • 4 tablespoons teriyaki sauce

  1. Cut bacon into small strips cutting widthways, put into large pot and cook partially on high then turn heat down and cook till almost crisp (do not drain off).
  2. Add onions to cooked bacon and let cook till onions are clear, then add mushrooms.
  3. Add Teriyaki sauce to mixture. Turn heat down to lowest heat and add frozen cut green beans (make sure they are frozen when you add them... the extra water aids in cooking).
  4. Simmer on low heat for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. The longer they cook the better they seem to be. You can add more Teriyaki sauce to taste.

This is fabulous. I was not fortunate enough to have teryaki sauce on hand but I did use sweet chilli dipping sauce. I believe it will be just as tasty with teriyaki sauce and am currently in the process of making it correctly. I cut the recipe in 1/3 since it is just my hubby and myself but highly recommend this not just as a christmas treat but as a weekly recipe. - 30 Dec 2013
