German pork stew

    Perfect to cook in a slow cooker for a hearty dinner on a cold wintry night. This recipe was given to me by my nan years ago and I make it at least once a week during the cold months.

    Serves: 6 

    • 1.25kg shoulder of pork
    • 3 tablespoons butter
    • 4 onions
    • 1 small turnip
    • 4 carrots
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 2 whole cloves
    • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • freshly ground black pepper
    • beef stock
    • grated fresh horseradish (optional)

    1. Cut the pork into 2cm cubes, chop the onions and cut the turnip and carrots into strips.
    2. Heat the butter in a frying pan and add the pork, turning until nicely browned on all sides. Transfer the pork to your slow cooker.
    3. Add the onions, turnip, carrots, bay leaf, cloves, thyme, salt, pepper and stock to cover the ingredients and rise roughly 2cm above.
    4. Swich on your slow cooker and set timer for a 9 - 10 hour cooking time. Serve the stew topped with a generous sprinkling of horseradish.
