Cumin-Spiced Lamb Burgers

    This recipe blends the flavours of cumin and lamb into one delicious burger. They are really tasty and super-easy to make. You can also cook these burgers on the barbecue, when the sun is finally out.

    Makes: 4 burgers

    • 450g minced lamb
    • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint leaves or 1 tablespoon dried mint
    • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander
    • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano or 1 tablespoon dried oregano
    • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
    • 1 teaspoon sherry
    • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon black treacle
    • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
    • 1/2 teaspoon crushed chillies
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • 4 pitta breads
    • 115g feta cheese, crumbled

    1. Preheat barbecue for medium heat.
    2. Place the lamb in a large bowl and mix with the mint, coriander, oregano, garlic, sherry, vinegar and black treacle. Season with cumin, allspice, crushed chillies, salt and black pepper; mix well. Shape into 4 burgers.
    3. Brush barbecue grid with oil. Barbecue burgers 5 minutes on each side or until well done. Heat the pitta pocket briefly on the barbecue. Serve burgers wrapped in pittas with feta cheese.

    Cook the burgers in a frying pan or on the grill.

    I made these into mini burgers for a BBQ party we had, then served with mini pitta breads and tzatziki (no feta). Everyone LOVED them! They were so fantastically flavoured - the spices are spot-on! I will definitely make these again. Thank you Alan!  -  04 Mar 2011
