About this recipe: This is my family's favourite meal. It's a white-sauce based chicken stew, with peas, potatoes, celery, carrots and dumplings. This stew is a great winter warmer.

  • 750ml water
  • 120g celery, chopped
  • 2 onions, quartered
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon chicken seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets
  • 5 carrots, sliced
  • 275g frozen peas
  • 4 potatoes, quartered
  • 360g dumpling mix
  • 325ml milk or as required

  2. Add potatoes and carrots; cover and cook another 30 minutes.
  3. Remove chicken from pot, shred it and return to pot. Add peas and cook only 5 minutes longer.
  4. Add dumplings. To make dumplings: Mix dumpling mix and milk until a soft dough forms. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto BOILING stew. Simmer covered for 10 minutes, then uncover and simmer an additional 10 minutes.

Tasty stew. At first I thought it wasn't going to work but it actually turned out really nice. Just right for winter evening. - 20 Nov 2014
