Traditional Christmas Pudding

This is a fairly basic Christmas plum pudding recipe but unlike other recipes it can actually have plums in it. Unfortunately the ingredient list is so long it isn't easy to make it in less than industrial quantities! This could prove fortunate, however, as they make great food gifts. You can substitute a mixture of fresh and dried apricots of peaches for the plums if you wish.

This isn't a traditional Christmas pudding recipe, but I love it simply for that fact! The variations on this are endless because the filling can be any combination of mincemeat, pumpkin and/or cranberry sauce, but here's my favourite combination.

Traditional Christmas boiled plum pudding
This is my Aunty Jan's recipe for a delicious Christmas plum pudding, it is so good that she gets orders from other people! It is a lovely winter dessert, great with custard, cream or ice cream (or all of the above!) and full of festive spirit! It is however, a lengthy process - but is worth it!

It just isn't Christmas without Christmas pudding! Plan this pudding in advance. The longer the pudding matures, the more flavour it will have. Enjoy with brandy sauce.
Chocolate Christmas pudding
I wanted to create a light chocolate Christmas pudding with plenty of chocolate chips so the kids would at least try it! No booze in this one and it cooks in a much shorter time but everyone enjoyed it and said it still tasted like Christmas pudding!
Christmas chocolate pudding
This is a steamed chocolate pudding that's more chocolate than anything else but it is lightly spiced with cinnamon and allspice so I call it my Christmas chocolate pudding. Much lighter than traditional Christmas puds at the end of a big meal.

We worked out the other day this recipe is probably from around 1890. They used breadcrumbs to pad it out back then and my mother-in-law still does that. It tastes fantastic. Best if you can make it two weeks ahead.

Eve's Christmas pud
This Christmas pud is a delightful alcoholic Christmas treat. I use the cherries I have used to make cherry brandy.

Lighter than the traditional pudding, this is packed with fruit, soaked in sherry and orange juice so it's extra juicy. Served with brandy sauce, this Christmas pudding won't leave you feeling uncomfortably full.

Best Christmas Pudding
The last Sunday before Advent is often called ‘Stir up Sunday’. Christmas puddings are best made a month or so before the big day itself so the mixture has time to fully mature. Traditionally, the whole family takes a turn at stirring the Christmas pudding, whilst making a wish. Another popular ritual is to add a coin or a sixpence into the mix. Whoever finds it on his or her plate on Christmas Day is brought abundant wealth and happiness!

This Christmas pudding still fills me with nostalgia when I make it, I always helped my mother to make it in early November. I make it as early as possible to let it mature. It's still written on the original paper. My 4 children and 8 grandchildren look forward to it every Christmas.
