This recipe comes straight from my mother-in-law in Denmark. It's a little labour-intensive, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be addicted! Serve warm with a brown sauce, small red boiled potatoes and sweet and sour cabbage. Better still, double the batch and have enough the next day to slice and place on toast with mayonnaise (open-faced, of course, the Scandinavian way)!

Serve these Swedish meatballs the traditional way, with boiled potatoes and lingonberry preserves, for a delicious meal that the whole family will enjoy!

My family devours these meatballs. Personally, I prefer to use a 50/50 ratio of minced beef and pork. I like to add nutmeg and allspice to the mixture which goes well with pork.

Taste great with a traditional Swedish cream sauce, lingonberry jam and either mashed or boiled potatoes. The meatballs are also yummy cold on sandwiches or at a picnic. Very easy to freeze, so you can make a substantial batch.

My mum served these beef and pork meatballs every Christmas eve with two sauces; a soured cream sauce and a sweeter lingonberry sauce.

Pork and beef meatballs flavoured with delicate herbs, spices and redcurrant jelly. Nice served with a creamy white wine sauce with rice and a dollop of redcurrant jelly on the side. Equally nice served just as they are with salad and chips.

Served with boiled potatoes and lingonberry jam Swedish köttbullar are as traditional as it gets in Sweden on the holidays as well as for an everyday meal. It’s one of the essentials on the Christmas table but without the creamy sauce since the Swedish Christmas table consists of many things you combine together!
